Going On a Trip in Our Little Rocket Ship @ 01:44 pm

Current Mood: anxious anxious

I've been mostly ignoring my upcoming trip to CT so I don't give myself ulcers worrying about all the small details that I can't fix until it's time to go.  So now I'm there... at the point where I need to worry about the details.

I lost my phone, and I NEED a phone while there, so I had to get a new one.  Bad news: we don't qualify for the discounted price (when renewing a contract), so it's mega expensive.  We love our current pricing contract ($15 a month for emergencies, .20 per txt) so I don't want to change carriers.  Good news: I found a "certified" used one, and they are overnight shipping it to me for free.  I just need to program all the stuff in it without the benefit of my old phone.  I know that I will probably find my old phone as soon as the other one gets here.

I'm agonizing over how to lug David around the airport(s) with me and not have too much stuff to carry.  I will have a medium sized rolling suitcase, a carryon bag/diaper bag, and a infant car seat.  I didn't buy David his own seat on the plane, so I have to check the car seat.   No one is picking me up on the other side, I'm renting a car and driving to my brother's place, so pushing a stroller, carrying a diaper bag and a carseat, and pulling a suitcase probably wouldn't work.  I'm thinking that my best chance is to wear David in my Moby wrap and curbside check my suitcase and carseat.  Then all I have to carry is my carry-on.  I was thinking of borrowing Rhonda's awesome stroller/backpack, but I'm afraid that, knowing me, if I add anything else to worry about, my head will explode.  Too much futzing with stuff makes me cranky and loose my shit at inappropriate times.

I still need to pack for both of us.  I want to leave the house clean for Chris, but since he's decided to mostly just take off of work (thanks anyway to Alice and Heidi for offering to babysit Ben... he may take you up on the offer if work explodes without him, but it looks like we mostly won't need you) he can make the house clean for me, right?  Diapers, medications, food, toys, oh my.

I have two giant fears.  What if someone tries to take David?  What if I can't prove he's mine?  And the other one is about getting really really lost.  I asked for a sat nav in the car, but of course they will tell me there's only one availible in a massively upgraded car.  What if it's really snowing badly?  I'll be in unfamiliar territory, lost, in the snow, with a baby.

Rainbows on the horizon:  I get to see my brother and his new baby, my niece and sister in law.  I will hopefully get to see the ocean (yes!).  It will be a little vacation.  It will be a good exercise in letting go and relaxing for a massve control freak like me.

I'm pretty sure that airlines offer some guest service for situations just like this. If a passenger has issues getting around, like having an infant and luggage, there should some sort of courtesy clerk available to shuttle you around. (They may charge extra; I don't know.) Which airline? Could you find out about this on the website?

I looked last night as a tribute to my anxiety, and didn't see anything. They just suggested I streamline my carry ons, but make sure I pack everything I might need.

when we were flying for my grandfather's funeral, and Carah had just got out of surgery, we just asked the agents if there was a way to help her get to the gate. They had a cart there, and we all got to zoom around on it. they also arranged to have it waiting for us in Denver, so, even if they don't have it online, they were very helpful.

I also just want to give you (((HUGS))) and send you anti-anxiety somethings.

I'm thinking this may be in order when we go pick up the car, since it's offsite. I'll inquire.

Do you have a stroller that the infant seat sits in? When I went to CA for the first time on my own with Liam, I put him in his infant seat, put the seat in the stroller, and stuffed the diaper bag in the stroller also. I gate checked the stroller (I had a seat for Liam, but you can gate check both the stroller and the carseat) and on the other end (where I was also on my own), I had to push the stroller with one hand and drag the rolling bag with the other, but it did work. Security was a bit of a challenge, but I also found that people were incredibly helpful.

And my grandmother-in-law's advice (passed on through my grandfather-in-law) is that people will always help a woman with a baby, particularly if you sit on the floor and burst into tears. :)

Also, bring Davey's birth certificate. I never had anyone ask for it, but better to be prepared.

I don't think we ever got a birth cert, and didn't realize it until this week. Too late to do anything about it, of course.

We still have Liam's graco carseat/stroller if you want to borrow it.

We have our setup, too, thanks though. I think I may go for minimalism, and hope it doesn't bite me in the ass.

Also, I suspect proving Davey belongs to you wouldn't be that hard. You're MOMMA. He's only going to want to be with you...not some strange person. I wonder how to prove Liam's mine when I'm carrying his kicking and screaming toddler-self through the park, stuffing his kicking and screaming toddler-self into a carseat, and driving away with him. :)

If anyone gives you any grief, take out your new cellphone and call Chris first. He will help you feel better. Then call me. I will make them cry.

Here's what I would do:

- wear David in wrap, carry diaper bag
- check rolling bag and carseat

You will need some sort of printed information that has David's full name and DOB. Doesn't have to be a birth cert but it has to be something like a vax record or hospital bill (what we used before Matthew's came in the mail). When you get to the airport to check in, check your bags and get an infant lap seat ticket for David, this will allow him to get through security. If Chris is taking you to the airport you can get a nontraveling companion pass for him so he can go through security with you and help you to the gate.

On the other end I would pick up bags and use the strap of the carseat to tie it to the suitcase and wheel it to your rental car company.

On the plane don't hesitate to ask flight attendants to help you. I had to change Matthew's diaper and had an attendant hold Lindsey for me in the meantime.

Where are you flying into? And something else - print out google maps of everywhere you'll need to go so you don't worry. Where are you going in CT? I may be of assistance navigating!

Use the straps...clever! I will do that. And I do have the vax sheet, I'll bring that, too. I also have his ss card.

I'm flying into Hartford. I do have a google map printed out. East coast is wacky... all those trees and widing roads...it looks like the middle of nowhere but it's packed with peeps. I'm travelling due east to Windsor? Is Hartford big?

The airport in Hartford isn't really in Hartford, its 13 mi north of Hartford in Windsor Locks. It'll be easy to get out of the airport and onto 91 there.

You won't need his SS card, the airline will only need something with his DOB on it.

I do, but the bag I have is specifically designed to fit well under a seat, and it clips to my suitcase. Thanks, though!
